A knife we may use for simple things like eating, while a self-harmer sees much more troubling potential in.
Self-harm comes at a price. It delays actual processing of emotions by allowing the self-harmer to focus on physical pain as opposed to the emotional pain. However, doesn’t that sound just a little bit easier? As someone who works with troubled youth that crave that replacement,
I've seen the things we all use for hygiene being used for an emotionally physical release.
Something we use for a daily use, of charging our assistants.. they can use as a strangulation device.
I and the other staff need to pay attention to what things could possibly be used as a self-harm tool. These are just some of the things the youth I work with can use to self-harm, and that I need to be aware of if they’re in the vicinity of being grabbed by said youth. It is random what they’ll think of to get that emotional release, and my job, is to keep them as safe as I can.
